Biography

Matilda Inder was born about 1827, probably at Martock, Somerset, England. She was possibly the daughter of Simon Inder and Mary Russel, in which case she was baptised at Martock on 14 October 1827, and in the 1841 England and Wales Census, she was in a household at North Street, Martock, with her parents and 7 siblings.

On 10 January 1855, at Campbell Town, Tasmania, she married Charles Cleave.

She died on 21 May 1866 aged about 38 (her grave says 37), and was buried at the Anglican Cemetery in Ross, Tasmania.

Research Notes

• If she was the sister of Samuel Inder and Walter John Inder, she would have arrived in Tasmania first, since they didn't arrive until around 1859, after spending a year or so in Victoria.
• If she was not their sister, her name may have been Matilda Inder Hendon, but perhaps still related to them, or perhaps Matilda Hendon Inder.
• Otherwise, she may have been named Hendon and married somebody named inder, or vice-versa.
• The name "Hendon" appears in a couple of birth records, where the informant was William Buckwood, a chaplain at Campbell Town; he may have just made a mistake.
