Biography

Charles was born about 1799.

Charles Cleave married Mary Roberts in Devon about 1826.

Their children were

  1. Henry Cleave 1827–1904
  2. Walter Cleave 1828–
  3. John Cleave 1830–
  4. Thomas Cleave 1832–

Charles was a ploughman. He was convicted of sheep stealing in Devon on 24 July 1833 and received a life sentence. The convict ship Moffatt had 300 convicts aboard when it arrived in Tasmania, Australia. It sailed on 4th January, 1834 and arrived 9th May, 1834 at Van Diemen's Land .[1]

His employer in 1841 was Mr Horne. [2]

Jan 1846: After 11 years in Australia he received his pardon, "having completed beyond the ordinary servitude in the Colony, and a Ticket of Leave holder and their conduct having been very correct." His Ticket of Leave was issued 14/04/1842, and his Conditional Pardon was approved 15/01/1846.

According to convict records: He applied to have his family sent out but this does not seem to have happened.

He lived in the Ross district - farmer and also licensee of pub.

Jan 1855: At age 55 he married Matilda Inder, aged about 25 (remarriages were permitted in the Colony) on 10 January 1855 in the Campbell Town district. 5 children were born (the mother’s name is also recorded as “Hendon”.) Matilda died on May 21 1866 aged only 37. She is buried in the Ross General Cemetery, Campbell Town, Tasmania [3]

In July 1862 he was serving on a jury in Ross. [4]

In 1867 [5] William Harris was charged before the Warden with being an idle and disorderly person, in being found on the premises of Mr. Charles Cleave, at Ross, for an unlawful purpose, on the 2nd October inst. Mr Cleave and three of his children were examined in support of the charge. The prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to 3 months' hard labor.

He passed away in Campbell Town, Tasmania on 27 April 1873 aged 75. His occupation is listed as a farmer. [6] [7]

Testator died 27 April 1873.
