Josephine was born in 1903. Josephine Hooper ... She passed away in 1993. [1]
She grew up in Durban and attended school at Maris Stella Convent, Essenwood Road, Durban. She is recorded as departing London on S/s Inanda on 7 Oct 1911 for Beira with her parents and all her siblings except Edward who presumably was at school at Stonyhurst (Ref 1). Before marrying she travelled twice(?) more to Europe by ship, the second time to attend the 1925 Holy Year in Rome. The latter would appear to relate to her embarking from London on the Garth Castle with her parents and her sister Gynn in First Class on 11 Mar 192? (Ref 1) with her age as 22. One of these trips included a visit to the Shrine at Lourdes. One voyage experienced a ship's leak that necessitated calling at St Helena Island. In her later married life she was active in the Kloof Women's Institute and especially in its Bantu School Feeding scheme. She was sacristan at Pinetown and Kloof RC churches from the 1930s to the 1960s. She had a great gift with animals, especially horses, and she was an enthusiast gardener with green fingers. She inherited her father's skill with the stock market and her bedtime reading included The Farmer's Weekly and The Financial Mail. She was buried at Marianhill next to her husband.
