It all began with an album of old family photographs given to me for a 21st birthday present.
I started a small tree with my mum, names she knew (turns out her family went by mostly nicknames!) and rough dates, I only started really researching after she passed away, and the things I have found!
Did she know her grandfather was not born an Amos?!
He must have lived with the Amos family practically from birth, as he was baptised at the age of 7 months as the son of Thomas Amos and Ann Moyston on the same day as their daughter Janet. His baptism record has his name written as John Henry Hickley Amos.
He obviously grew up knowing this, as it is written on his marriage certificate that he was the foster son of Thomas Amos! Originally the marriage was registered under the name John Henry Amos Vickery, but a correction was made to that when Jack enlisted in the AIF, and changed to John Henry Amos.
I have tested my dna with Ancestry (user name KarynnotKaren).
I have also uploaded my dna results to FTDNA, MyHeritage and GEDmatch.
I have a couple of brick walls I would love to break through!
I would love to find out about the birth parents of my great grandfather John Henry Amos and discover the "Hickley/Vickery" connection.
On the 98th anniversary of John's death (20 Dec 2022), I believe that I have discovered his birth mother! And her name was not Hickley or Vickery - it was Heatley!!
Sarah Emma Heatley was 18 when she had a son she named John Henry born 9 Sep 1874 in Sandhurst, no father was recorded on the birth certificate. She also had a son born in 1872 Thomas William Heatley. DNA matches for myself and 3 other descendants of John Henry Amos with descendants of Sarah's other son Thomas, and also descendants of Sarah's brother's Joseph Heatley and William Henry Heatley would confirm she was the birth mother of John Henry Amos. At this time the relationships are greater than 3rd cousin, and as they are with Ancestry, I do not know if they triangulate, so cannot change John's mother's relationship status to confirmed with DNA (yet)!
2 days later I think I have found the birth father of John Henry Amos! This I have worked on for years, with DNA matches for myself and 3 other descendants of John Henry Amos to a McNamara family, but I did not know if I was looking for a possible birth mother or father, until now! I believe John's birth father was John McNamara born c1854 in Adelaide, he was the son of James McNamara and Catherine Guerin. The family lived in Chewton, Victoria from about 1869, where Sarah Heatley was born and lived. With the highest DNA match being a half 2nd cousin 1x removed (that's complicated!) I was able to change John's father's relationship status to confirmed with DNA.
My paternal great grandfather Herman Samuel Neumann. It has been suggested that he was a sailor that may have jumped ship when it docked here in South Australia. His certificate of naturalisation says that he was born in a place perhaps called Clien Lukto in Germany, and arrived on the ship Bertha in 1892. The Bertha was not a passenger ship, so that might be where the theory of a sailor jumping ship comes from. He did not marry my great grandmother for almost another 10 years, so there is a story to discover here!
My maternal 3 great grandmother Elizabeth (Webb) Clayton. I thought I had solved this one, then (as I tend to do!) kept researching, and actually dis-proved what I had! DNA connections for descendants of Elizabeth's children William, John and Agnes suggest that she is the sister of William Webb (abt.1805-) but baptisms for both Eliabeth and William are still to be found.
You will find me working on :
Tonkin Name Study
If you are interested please say hi! I have a few research pages started, and can think of a couple of new ones that could be interesting.
My most recent Tonkin ancestor is my 2 Great Grandmother Hannah Tonkin.
She married her cousin William Opie, whose grandmother Elizabeth Tonkin is the sister of Hannah's father Stephen Tonkin.

12th Infantry Battalion, 11th Reinforcements
My grandfather Stanley Russell Carter embarked with the 11th reinforcement, 12th Australian Infantry Battalion on the 27 Oct 1915 on HMAT Benalla A24. I have a photograph from his collection of what appeared to be the 11th reinforcement before they embarked. I have been researching this photograph for years now, attempting to identify some of the other men in the photograph, and have decided to add what I have found here on WikiTree.
Pick a Soldier, Plant a Tree

To aid WikiTree in the administration of my account should I be incapacitated, or in the event of my death, I request that Rachel Cunningham continue as manager for the profiles that we both manage, with any private profiles to be set to open status, including my own (please add my year of death). All remaining open profiles (including free space pages) to be orphaned, with the hope that someone will adopt them and give them some Wikitree love.

Karyn, thanks for your contributions to the project.
I'm contacting you for the annual ANZACS Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve profiles of ANZACs on WikiTree.
Please could you reply to this profile comment, or send me a private message to let me know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if so, what ANZACs activity you're planning to work on over the coming year. There are some ideas for activities on this page - Project:Anzacs. You could also add or update your entry on the 'Project Members and what we are doing' heading on that page.
If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you as a member of the Project.
The ANZACs Project is a sub-project of the Military and War Project, which has a channel on Discord. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. It's a great way to communicate with other members of the Project and help each other out.
We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Gillian ~ ANZACS Project Leader
I would like to stay with the Anzacs Project and get back to working on the Pick a Soldier, Plant a Tree Project in particular men commemorated at Menin Gate. Regards Karyn

Working on the Tonkin name study, Cornwall is where the majority of the Tonkin's originate, and I will work on those profile's mostly, but also take an interest in Cornwall emigrants to South Australia.
