Biography

An Old Parish Register from Paisley Middle Church, now held at the National Archives in Edinburgh and www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, shows:

“Henderson - Margaret, daughter of John Henderson, Weaver, by Helen Orr, born 23rd, baptized 24th May 1792”

Margaret Henderson married William Lockhart, on 7 September 1811 at Paisley High Church. The record confirmed that William was a soldier at time of marriage. They went on to have eight children. (Years later, their eldest daughter Ellen Lockhart, wife of James Clezie, proved the link: she gave birth in 1849 at Toronto to a daughter "Helen Orr Clezie", named after Margaret's mother, Helen Orr.)

This Lockhart family emigrated to Canada sometime between 1824-1831. The last known record of them in Scotland was the baptism of daughter Margaret, on 13 June 1824 at Paisley; and first known record in Canada was the census in June 1831 at St. Philippe, near Montréal. Between those dates, two more Lockhart daughters were born - Margaret (1827-8) and Jane (1829-30) - but the exact dates and locations of birth are unknown.

1831 census at Saint-Philippe, southeast of Montréal in Lower Canada (now Québec) showed William Lockhart, with a wife and six unnamed daughters: two aged over 14 and four under 14. Saint-Philippe was an almost entirely French-speaking, Catholic village. The Lockharts were among a tiny minority of British Protestants in the town. Two sons in this family, Archibald, 18, and John, 16, weren't listed with their parents in the census. Maybe they worked and lived away from home, or were in the militia? A third son, Robert, was born in late 1833 at Montreal.

Margaret's husband, William Lockhart, died between September-November, 1833, shortly before son Robert's birth. Then sometime between 1833-40, the widow Margaret remarried to John Cloyde or Cloyd (both spellings found). The couple moved with their various children to the United States.

1840 census at Troy, New York, showed "John Cloyd". He had a family but scanty details are shown in this census record.

1850 census at Troy showed "John Cloyde" and wife Margaret; her daughter Mary and son-in-law George Dow, both born in Scotland; three Dow children (two born in Newfoundland but the youngest born in New York); and Margaret's youngest son Robert Lockhart, 16, born in Canada shortly after his father's death.

In a separate household at Troy, the 1850 census showed 6 unmarried women named "Cloyd" (without "e") who almost certainly were John Cloyde's daughters by his earlier marriage. And in the nearby community of Lansingburgh lived Margaret's 2nd son, John Lockhart, with his wife Ellen or Helen (not to be confused with John's sister Ellen, who was married to James Kerr Clezie and lived in Toronto.)

Margaret's eldest son, Archibald Lockhart, died in 1857 at Montréal. John Cloyde died, at or near Troy, New York, before 1860. Margaret - now about 68 and twice-widowed - moved to Chicago, to live with her adult children.

1860 census showed "Margaret Cloyd", 69, living at Chicago with her daughter Jane(t), wife of Alex McNeill. In another household at Chicago the census showed Margaret's second son, John Lockhart; while youngest son, Robert Lockhart, was listed in the census at Memphis, Tennessee, a year before the U.S. Civil War began; and eldest daughter Ellen lived with her husband at Cleveland, Ohio. The family had scattered!

1870 census showed "Margret Cloyd", 78, still at Chicago, now living with her widowed son-in-law, George Dow.

Margaret died on 17 November 1879 at Chicago, age 87. The death certificate helpfully showed her full name as "Margaret Henderson Cloyde" and place of birth as Paisley, Scotland. She was buried at Graceland cemetery.

Margaret is my great-great-great-grandmother.
