John Cloyde or Cloyd was born about 1787, in the United Kingdom, apparently in England.
Before 1816 he married a woman named Abigail, surname unknown. Two children were born in 1816 & 1818 at Chichester, Sussex (now West Sussex), located south of London, England. Other children were born later in England, exact locations unknown. Then, John and his family migrated to North America.
John Cloyd(e) was shown in 1830 on the passenger list of the ship "Hudson", age 49, occupation upholsterer, arriving at New York.
John's wife Abigail seems to have died about 1830-35. John remarried to Margaret Henderson, widow of William Lockhart. No record of the marriage has been found. Was it at Montréal, where Margaret lived? Or in New York, where John lived? Unknown. The next-known record of them was at Troy, New York, shown in the 1840 U.S. census.
1850 census at Troy showed "John Cloyde", 63, upholsterer, born 1787 in Scotland. Most other records say he was born in England - not Scotland. With him were his wife Margaret, 60, born in Scotland; Margaret's daughter Mary Dow, 31, three Dow children (two born in Newfoundland, the third in New York) and Margaret's son, Robert Lockhart, 16, born in Canada.
At a different address in Troy, the 1850 census showed 6 unmarried women named Cloyd - apparently daughters of John Cloyd(e) by his earlier marriage: Anny Cloyd, 30, born in England; Sarah Cloyd, 28, born in England; Charlotte Cloyd, 24, born in England; Ellen Cloyd, 22, born in England; Jane Cloyd, 19, born in New York; Rebecca Cloyd, 16, born in New York. A central New York directory for 1850-51 showed: "Cloyde, John, 202-1/2 River, Troy".
Between 1850-55, John and Margaret moved to Illinois. The 1855 Illinois state census at West Chicago showed "John Cloyd". A second person - unnamed - lived with him. Was it his wife, Margaret? Unknown.
John Cloyd(e) seems to have died between 1855-60 in Illinois but no clear record of his death has been found. Margaret, his wife or widow, was shown in the 1860 U.S. census at Chicago, living with her daughter, Janet, wife of Alexander McNeil or McNeill.
