Biography

This profile is part of the Watten, Caithness One Place Study.
James Gunn is a member of Clan Gunn.

Captain James Gunn of Scouthal in the parish of Watten, Caithness, was named as the father of James Gunn (or Rose) who was born illegitimately in January 1825 and baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 3 October 1825.[1]

The circumstances of James Gunn Junior's conception were considered at meetings of the Watten parish kirk sessions in 1825.[2] The minutes of February 1825 record that James was a "Captain" and that he had confessed to the ministers that he was the father of Isobel Rose's child. The kirk session decided that James Gunn should be rebuked for his sins in front of the congregation.
