James Gunn (or Rose) was born in January 1825 and baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 3 October 1825.[1]
James's birth was illegitimate and his parents were required to admit their sin of fornication before the Watten kirk sessions in 1825.[2]
In 1841 James was living with his mother and Alexander Rose in Bilbster in the parish of Wick, Caithness. James's trade was "agricultural labourer". Although no records have been found yet to support this, it would be reasonable to assume that Alexander and Isobel were related and that Alexander was probably James's maternal grandfather.[3]
