Robert was the second son of George "The Crowner" Gunn. He, his father, and his brother John were killed at the "Battle of Champions" (also called the "Battle of St Tears"). It was intended to settle a long standing feud between the Gunns and the Keiths by a battle between twelve men on horseback on either side. However, the Keiths arrived with two men on each of their twelve horses, and killed most of the Gunns, including the Crowner and two of his sons. Sources disagree about the date, some citing 1478 and others 1464. there is also difference of opinion on the location, either St. Tear’s Chapel near Ackergill, or Strathmore.
Robert had three or four sons:
They were the ancestors of the Robson Gunns, and both Donald and John were chiefs for their respective descendants.
Based on the "Inventory of the goods of Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath" dated 1456, Robert's youngest brothers, Henry and Alexander were at least 20 in 1456. So Robert must have been born before 1430.
Depending on the date of the Battle of St Tears, Robert died in 1464 or 1478.
