Biography

Seoras (Gun) Gun Crowner or Coroner of Caithness, is a member of Clan Gunn.

The modern lineage and Sept Families of Clan Gunn rise from George Gunn, the Crowner (Crouner/Coroner or Warden) of Caithness, born in the first decade of the 15th century[1] Early records just call him the "Gunn Chieftan", or the "Crowner", but do not mention his first name.

George Gunn, seventh Chief, ruled in medieval splendour in his castle at Halberry; Castle Gunn having been abandoned by then. Before the Earldom of Caithness had been created by the Scottish King in 1455 in favour of the Sinclair family (by this time heirs to the ancient Norse Earldom) the justiciary of the county was in the hands of the Gunn Chieftain. He wore a great silver badge to proclaim the authority of his position ( hence the name “Am Braisdeach Mor” or “the great brooch-wearer”). A deadly feud had raged for a long time between the two clans of Keith - based at Ackergill Tower - and the Gunns, which culminated in the death of George, two of his sons and a number of his clansmen[2]. The Gunns and the Keiths agreed to meet with "twelve horsemen" on each side. The Gunns showed up with 12 men on 12 horses, but the Keiths put two men on each horse, for a total of 24 men. One tradition puts the venue of this episode at St. Tear’s Chapel (ND 367545) near Ackergill while a Highland version says that it happened near Strathmore. Similarly, there is a difference of opinion on the date. Both 1464 and 1478 have been cited[3].

George the Crowner had seven sons

  • James (not at the battle with the Keiths, became chief after the Crowner's death, died 1517, ancestor of the McHamish Gunns)
  • Robert (killed in the battle but left issue, ancestor of the Robson Gunns)
  • John (killed at the battle but left issue)
  • Alexander (had no issue)
  • William (wounded, but survived, ancestor of the MacWilliam, Williamson, and Wilson branches of the clan)
  • Torquill (survived the battle, but may have died soon after)
  • Henry (wounded, but survived, ancestor of the Hendersons)

and two daughters

Research Notes

The name was spelled Gun until about 1800.

The GEDCOM version of the profile for George Gunne (Gunne-43) lists his parents as James Gunne and Annie Baikie. However these are unsourced, and with blank Biographies. The reliable sources on the history of the Gunn Clan (e.g., "The Gunns" by Thomas Sinclair, and "History of the Clan Gunn" by Mark Rugg Gunn) say that the immediate ancestry of "The Crowner" Gunn is unknown. Therefor I am disconnecting them.Gunn-471 20:23, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

One source claims the descent from Snaekoll (considered the “original” Gunn) to George the Crowner as

  • Snae Koll Gunnison
  • Son of Snae Koll
  • James de Gunn
  • Ingram de Gunn
  • Sir Donald Gunn
  • Sir James Gunn
  • George Gunn (the Crowner)[6]

but most sources say that his direct ancestry is unknown, or dispute the descent from Snaekoll..

I read that no Y-DNA information is known about this family. But I have read on MyTrueAncestry that George Gunn Coroner of Caithness (1380-1464) belongs to haplogroup R1b1a1b1a1a1b1a or R-M273.

Gunne-43 and Gunn-875 appear to represent the same person because: they seem to be intended to be the same person.

First, different sources give different dates for the "Battle of Champions" - 1478 or 1464.

George the Crowner had seven sons

  • James (not at the battle with the Keiths, died 1517)
  • Robert (killed in the battle but left issue)
  • John (killed at the battle but left issue)
  • Torquill (survived the battle, but may have died soon after)
  • William (wounded, but survived,)
  • Alexander
  • Henry (wounded, but survived)

and two daughters

  • Bessie
  • Mary

If nobody objects, I intend to update the profile.

Gunn-875 and Gunne-43 do not represent the same person because: Years are similar, but 10-15 years is quite a variance. Only one profile has locations of birth, death, etc., and siblings and children raise questions. Biggest problem is the different fathers, with the age difference. I have saved the information and will do some investigation, but will be an unmerged match for now.

Hi Melanie, I just noticed that you adopted this profile....I think it may be a match for http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gunne-43. This family needs some work, I put a lot of source on the Gunne-43 profile that can help. Take a look.

You may want to take a look at this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Gunn and http://www.rampantscotland.com/clans/blclangunn.htm for sources. I am not sure about the tie to Robinsons in that century.

He was a coroner
