Biography

William Gray Sr. was an Appalachian.

William was born in 1771. He was the son of Jean McCain and John Gray.

He married Mary Davis on 09 Jan 1794 in Washington county, Virginia.^[1] They had children.

In the 1820 census, William was in Washington County, Virginia. The household included his imputed wife, seven white children, and three enslaved people.^[2]

In the 1830 census William was in Washington County, Virginia, with his imputed wife, six children, and eight enslaved people. ^[3]

In the 1840 census William was in Washington County, Virginia. His household was made up of William, his wife, and six others including three young children. There were also ten enslaved people.^[4]

He passed away 10 May 1846 in Washington County, Virginia. ^[5]

In his Last Will, William bequeathed three enslaved people to his wife.

• Elina, a girl
• Frank, a boy

William further specified that the other people he enslaved (not named) were to be divided among his children. ^[5]
