Elina Gray was an Appalachian.
Elina was enslaved on the farm of William McCain Gray in Washington County, Virginia, near Abingdon. In May 1846, he described Elina in his Last Will as "a Negro girl" in a bequest to his wife Mary (Davis) Gray. Upon Mary's death, William specified that Elina and any children she might have, were to be sold and the proceeds divided among his children. [1]
