Biography

William 'Grey' was baptised on 12 Oct 1777 at Purton, Wiltshire, son of Thomas and Eleanor.[1]

William Gray of Purton married Ann 'Tibbales' of Lydiard Tregoze on 13 Oct 1794 at Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire, in the presence of James Tibbales and Elizabeth Langlee.[2]

Children of William and Ann Gray baptised at Purton, Wiltshire:[3]

  • Thomas Gray (baptised on 18 Oct 1795; buried on 21 Aug 1798)
  • John Gray (baptised on 07 Jan 1798)
  • Thomas Gray (baptised on 27 Apr 1800)
  • Samuel Gray (baptised on 05 Jan 1803)
  • Mary Gray (baptised on 07 Apr 1805)
  • William Gray (baptised on 04 Oct 1807)
  • Jane Gray (baptised on 29 Apr 1810)
  • Eliza Gray (baptised on 04 Mar 1812; buried on 03 Oct 1813)

The Salisbury Journal of 2nd March 1818 recorded that William Gray, Thomas Gray, Samuel Gray, and Mary Gray were sent to prison for stealing two hives and two stocks of bees, the property of John Gray, of Purton.[4]

The Great Roll for the Wiltshire Lent Assizes of 1818 has an entry for a William Gray sentenced to 12 months for stealing bees. His employment was recorded as Basket Maker.[5]

The Calendar of Prisoners in Devizes Jail recorded William Gray aged 40 present on 31st Mar 1818, 14th Jul 1818, 20th Oct 1818 and 12th Jan 1819.[6][7][8][9]

“Convicted at the Lent Assizes, 1818, of felony, was sentenced to be imprisoned in the House of Correction at Devizes for the space of twelve calendar months to hard labor, and once privately whipped”

No further record of the others involved in the case has been identified, though a Thomas Gray was imprisoned in Devizes for one month from 25th Sep 1818 for being “Idle and Disorderly”.[10] Thomas, Samuel and Mary are presumed to be the children of William Gray.
