Biography

Frederick Gipson is a part of US Black heritage.

Frederick Douglass Gipson was born in 1897. He was the son of General Gipson and Clara Idelet. In the 1900 census Frederick (age 4) was the son of Gina Gibson in Militia District 884, Sumter, Georgia.[1] In the 1910 census Fred (age 13) was the son of Gen Gipson Sr in Militia District 1007, Sumter, Georgia, United States.[2] In the 1920 census Fred (age 17), Laborer, was the single son of General Gibson in Militia District 1007, Sumter, Georgia.[3]

In the 1930 census Fred (age 30), Laborer, was the married head of household at 4-14- South Gifford Road-Spaurse Park, Quay, Indian River, Florida, United States.[4] In the 1940 census Fred (age 40), Farm Laborer, was the married head of household in Indian River, Florida.[5]

Fred registered for the draft on 14 February 1942 in Gifford, Indian River County, Florida, United States.[6] Fred joined the US Navy, and was at the Naval Training School (Diesel) at West 73rd Street and Clinton Road in Cleveland, Ohio. From there he was received by the USS Toucan (AM-387) on 25 November 1944.[7] He was serving as a Steward's Mate 2nd Class (StM2c) with the USS Toucan (AM-387) on 20 April 1945.[8] The Steward Branch was a racially segregated part of the U.S. Navy responsible for feeding and serving officers.[9][10] In November 1947 Frederick was a Stewards Mate 1st Class with the USS Salamonie (AO-26).[11]

In the 1950 census Fred (age 50), janitor, was the widowed head of household in Gifford, Indian River, Florida, United States.[12]

Fred died (age 86) on Sunday, 30 May 1983, at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida, United States.[13][14] He had been living at 4646 33rd Avenue in Gifford. Funeral services were Saturday, 4 June 1983, at Mount Zion AME Church.[15] He was buried in Gifford Cemetery, Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida, United States.[16]
