This previously unknown male had to have existed in order for daughter Jane to have been born.
His name however is unrecorded on either her marriage or death certificates, and may not be GIBSON - particularly as there are none obvious anywhere near the vicinity of Jane's first appearance in the records.
Many trees assign him the name William born 1790 Somerset and supposedly dying there in October 1867. Which William's death must have been registered elsewhere as the English death index has no 1867 William GIBSON deaths in Somerset.
The new GRO online index (Dec 2016) has a total of 32 William GIBSONs dying in England in 1867, only four of whom are 71 or over, none of those 4 were registered in the 4th qtr.
FamilySearch tree probably has the answer to this one, linking him to a family in Somerset, Massachusetts !
