Job Windsor was born near the end of Feb. 1815 at Queen Camel, Somerset, England to Thomas Windsor and Elizabeth Brook. He was baptized soon after on Feb. 26, 1815 at Queen Camel, Somerset, England. He was the eighth child in a family of nine children that had only one girl to the eight boys. Nothing more is known about his early years, but he would live his entire life in Queen Camel.
On April 22, 1839 Job Windsor married Ruth Payne at the Church of England, West Camel, Somersetshire, England. Job was listed as a labourer on the marriage certificate and the witnesses were a George Wear and Giles Wittey. It is not known who they were. Neither Job nor Ruth could write, as they both have only an “X” on the certificate. Ruth was the daughter of Thomas Payne and Sarah Lacey. Nothing else is known about Ruth’s family at this time. Ruth must have been quite pregnant at the wedding as only 23 days later she gave birth to their first child, a daughter, Amelia on May 15, 1839. Over the next 24 years, they would have a total of 11 children comprised of six boys and five girls.
About 18 months after their wedding and when little Amelia was still only a toddler, Job appeared before the courts on a charge of petty larceny and was given a sentence of two months in gaol or jail. It is not known exactly what his crime was, but one can imagine that perhaps he was stealing food for his family.
He is next found in the 1841 U.K. census at Queen Camel, Somerset. Job is listed as an agricultural labourer. Their daughter, Amelia is listed as Emelia, but this is certainly an error as her birth certificate is clearly Amelia. They are living next door to the parsonage or vicar’s residence.
In the 1851 U.K. census, they are still in Queen Camel and Job is still an agricultural labourer. He now has six children and the oldest, Amelia is working as a glover or glove maker. Four are going to school. The youngest, Absolam is only one month. In 1861, Job now has ten children. He is still an agricultural labourer and his ten year old son, Absolam now has the same occupation. Four of the girls are all glovers. Two younger children are going to school.
All of Job and Ruth’s 11 children married. Amelia and Harriet in 1863; Jemima in 1865; Luke in 1871, in Wales; Kitty, Absalom and Alfred, all in 1873; Levi in 1874 in Wales; Henry in 1878; Sarah Payne in 1882 and George in 1885 in Australia. Levi and George both emigrated to Australia in 1882. Thus by the time of the 1871 U.K. census, Job and Ruth only had three children left at home. Job was still an agricultural labourer as was one of his sons. Another son had no occupation and George, the youngest was going to school.
By the 1881 U.K. census, Job is 66 years old and is still a farm labourer. He and Ruth now have only their youngest son George still at home and he too is a farm labourer. Job passed away on March 06, 1887 at Queen Camel aged 72 years and was buried on March 12, 1887. His youngest daughter, Sarah Payne Windsor was present at his death and signed the record. He died from apoplexy which is similar to a stroke. This was certified by Dr. James Durley, M.D.
