Biography

Agnes / Nancy Fairbairn was born about 1788.

In her marriage record and in the record for the birth of her first child, her name is given as Nancy. But in the records for the births of her subsequent children, her name is given as Agnes. In birth records under both names, her husband is listed as John Riddell and his occupation as "miller". No records for a marriage between a John Riddell and an Agnes Fairbairn have been found. Thus it is reasonable to assume that Nancy and Agnes Fairbairn are the same person. ^[1]

Baptised as Agnes Fairbairn, died as Agnes Riddell, appears in census as Nancy Riddell ^[2]

Note: cert. shows Agnes as widow of John Riddell, farmer, d 11:30am of old age, no medical attendant, aged 73, d/o Archibald Fairbairn, farmer, and Mary m.s. Greeshon, both dec'd, inf son John reg. Melrose, May 9th. ^[6][7]
