Biography

William Batchelor Denmark Jr. was born April of 1743 in Woodstock Town, Hyde, North Carolina, United States. William's parents “William B. Denmark (later known as William B.) married Mourning Mitton Moye in 1730. He was a Blacksmith, and lived in the “Old Woodstock Town” in North Carolina. William and Mourning had at least four children: daughter Abigail; son Seaborne Edward (John); son William Batchelor (later known as W.B.); and daughter Sarah Margaret. They lived on some 270 acres five miles northwest of Woodstock at what was known as Denmark’s Point near the Matchapongo River (later renamed the Pungo River) in Old Hyde County. William Batchelor Denmark (W.B. that is) was born in either 1739, 1741 or 1743.

Family and Property

William Batchelor Jr. married several times: first to Mary Moye; then to her sister Anna.” W.B. was in North Carolina until 1784.[1]

First Marriage:

Together Mary (Moye) Denmark and William Batchelor Jr. had the following 9 known children:
1) Sarah Margaret (Denmark) Wise (named after her aunt Sarah Margaret)
2) Eleanor (Denmark) Hodges
3) William Denmark
4) Thomas Denmark
5) Seaborn Denmark
6) Elizabeth (Denmark) Burton
7) John Denmark
8) James Thomas Denmark Jr.
9) Margaret (Denmark) Bizzell

Second Marriage:

William Batchelor Jr. then married Anna Moye Denmark and together they had the following 10 known children:
1) Stephen Denmark
2) Susannah (Denmark) Jones
3) Jemima Denmark
4) Louisa (Denmark) Rester
5) Isabella (Denmark) Lott
6) Redden Denmark
7) James Denmark
8) Clarissa (Denmark) Lucas
9) Martha B. (Denmark) Jones
10) William Denmark Jr.

William and Anna had three sons that married three of the daughters of William and Sarah Margaret Denmark Wise.

Jane Jincey Wise married Malachi Moye-Denmark.
Susanah Wise married James Denmark.
Lavinia Wise married Redden Moye-Denmark.

On 3 July 1786 a warrant was dated for 200 acres of land for William Denmark. It was surveyed 12 July 1786. This land was in Effingham County, Georgia, bordered on the North side by the Great Ogechee and all other sides were vacant. [2] This is probably the first land William Denmark obtained in the area.

Land was granted to William Denmark on the 25th of December, 1793, which was later deeded to his son Stephen Denmark, then Effingham County, today Bulloch County, Georgia. [3] William Denmark obtained more acres of land.

In January 1795 William gifted a deed to his “beloved wife Anna and her children, to wit, Stephen Denmark, Susannah Jones, Jemima Denmark, Louisa Rester, Clarissa Denmark, Martha Denmark, and Redding Denmark.” The article notes that 3 other children were minors and were not named in the deed of gift but were James born 1779, William Jr. born 1784 and Malachi born 1787. [4]

Third Marriage

Finally, William Denmark moved to Warren County, Georgia after deeding his family with Anna and her children familial property. There he married Mary Cochrum in 1813 with whom he had no apparent children .

Death and Legacy

William died in about 1821 in Warren County, Georgia. Although he is listed on FAG, there is no grave and no cemetery on record. The actual burial site of William Denmark is not known.

Research and Notes

There are some disclaimers regarding Sarah Margaret Denmark who "was believed to be and not confirmed as" the wife of William Wise. The problem is clearly that the Denmarks have a challenging family especially in the light of modern research.

Solid documentations such as marriage and birth records were scarce in the colonies and then early states during this period so we can only depend on DNA connections.

Let it be noted, however, such issues with marriages within families were not a problem until fairly recently. This is why aristocrats often married cousins. In recent years Wikitree has aggressively utilized genetic genealogy which has proven the close genetic relationships between the families. This profile has been accessed over 1,200 times which would mean the information is important many family members, seen cross pollinating on relevant Denmark/Wise profiles. Comparing these profiles and families seem to definitively resolve questions about the Denmark and Wise's authenticity and roles in their respective families.

The biggest issue I see here is that by disenfranchising descendants because their parents lacked documented contracts for their familial relationships is it creates unnecessary blocks to valuable ancestors.

I'm not changing any history. I'm reformatting the biography to fit Wikitree protocol. I hope it meets with your approval.
