Note: Spelling varied wildly before the 20th century. Anyone searching for ancestors in this family should consider alternative spellings: Clazey, Clazie, Clazy, Clezie, Clezy. The name has even been found as Clacey, Clacy, Claisye, Claise, Clasey, Clasie, Cleasie, Clisy, Clizzee.

Janet was born between 1831-33, exact date not found. No birth or baptism record has been located, so we have only the information from census records. She was a daughter of John Clazie and Margaret Gray.

The 1841 UK census at High Street, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, showed that Janet lived with her mother.

The 1851 UK census at Chirnside, Berwickshire, appears to show the surname as "Clayzie" although that might simply be due to the census-taker's bad handwriting. It said Janet was age 20, a servant at Millbank House, near Ayton.

Although she never married, Janet had 4 known children, one born in 1853; twins born in 1855; and one born in 1860. In 1859 she sued William Anderson, a joiner, of Church Street, Berwick-upon-Tweed, alleging that he was the father of her twins, James and Janet, born in 1855. What was the outcome of this lawsuit?

The 1861 UK census at Chirnside, Berwickshire showed Janet was age 30, which puts her birth about 1831. The 1871 UK census - again at Chirnside - showed her age was 38, which suggests that she was born about 1833, differing from dates shown in other censuses.

Janet passed away in 1877 at 8 Normanby Street, Monkwearmouth, Durham, age about 40-45. Her eldest son William was present. The cause of death was shown as heart disease and bronchitis. ^[1]
