Biography

Jane Chisholm was born in 1833 in Dalkeith, the oldest child of John Chisholm and Isabella Wilson.

During her childhood Jane lived in Dalkeith with her family^[1],^[2].

On 1 November 1853, Jane married George Lambert in Dalkeith^[3]. By the end of that month, Jane and George had set sail for Trinidad, arriving early in 1854 ^[4].

Jane and George spent the next 16 years in Trinidad as United Presbyterian missionaries^[5] where at least six of their children were born. George resigned his position in 1870 and the family returned to Scotland where a further two children were born. Jane and her children may have returned to Scotland earlier than her husband as the 1871 census finds her living in Dalkeith with her children^[6], without her husband.

After returning to Scotland, George became UP minister at Rigg-of-Gretna ^[7]. Jane then moved to Gretna with her husband where their youngest daughter was born^[8], ^[9]. Many of the older children appear to have remained in the Dalkeith/Edinburgh area.

Jane was widowed in 1892. The 1901 and 1911 censuses then find her living with a number of her children in Edinburgh^[10], ^[11].

Jane died in Edinburgh in 1912^[12].
