Biography

Notables Project
Samuel Chisholm is Notable.

Samuel was born in 1836, the oldest son of John Chisholm and Isabella Wilson [1].

As a child, Samuel lived with his parents in Dalkeith. However, by 1851, he was working as a Grocer shop man for Alexander Mitchell; Samuel appears in Mitchell's household in the 1851 census [2].

Samuel Chisholm's father, John, and his business partner, George Gray, were very active in the political and social life of Dalkeith in the mid 19th century. So too was Alexander Mitchell, author of 'Political and Social Movements in Dalkeith, 1831 - 1832'. It seems that all three men may have had a significant impact on the development of the young Samuel Chisholm.

Samuel was also born into a family with a particularly strong religious belief, his sister and her minister husband spent a number of years in Trinidad as missionaries. Samuel was also strong in his faith and that was easily seen as he became more active in political and social circles.

According to The Practical Grocer, he "came to Glasgow in 1870, and began business in the wholesale grocery trade. From the first he has devoted much of his time and energy to religious, philanthropic, and civic work" [3].

Samuel married Charlotte Thompson in 1866 in Cumberland [4] where her father was a minister. The couple can be seen together in Glasgow in the censuses of 1871 to 1891. However, they had no children and Charlotte died in November 1900.

Samuel was elected to the Corporation of the City of Glasgow from Woodside Ward in 1888 and stood unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate for Glasgow Camlachie in the 1895 general election. He was Lord Provost of Glasgow between 1899 and 1902 and represented the city in events following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901.

Samuel Chisholm was awarded a baronetcy in the birthday honours of 1902.

In 1903, Samuel married Agnes Gibson Carnduff [5], widow of Thomas Henderson, known as the founder of the Anchor Line of steamers.

For much of the rest of his life, Samuel remained active in social and political circles.

Sir Samuel was widowed for the second time when Lady Chisholm died in 1921[6].

Sir Samuel Chisholm died in September 1923, aged 87 [7]. As he left no heirs, his title became extinct. Sir Samuel was buried at Cathcart Cemetery, East Renfrewshire [8].
