Biography

The Rev. David L. Burkhart, 71, Shillington, went to be with his Lord on Aug. 9, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. in his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Ruth Mae (Klopp) Burkhart. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Lester L. and Edna M. (Van Pelt) Burkhart.

He was a 1956 graduate of Reading High School, a 1960 graduate of Albright College and a 1963 graduate of United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. He later received his Master of Theology from United Theological Seminary.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Mohnton; Pikesville Sportsmen Club; IOOF 1175, Shillington; Zeta Omega Epsilon fraternity; KTZ fraternity; Reading High Alumni Association; and Hospitallers Relief Association.

He served congregations in Easton, Perkasie, Stroudsburg, Harmony, St. Paul's and Kleinfeltersville. He was on honorary voluntary location since 1978.

He was also a sales representative for Baldwin Hardware, Armor Research Co. and Mason Shoes. In his retirement, he specialized in weddings, baptisms and funerals.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Suzanne M., wife of James R. Myers, Muhlenberg Township, and Sandra R., wife of Bruce A. Buchalter, Shoemakersville.

Other survivors include a brother, John R. Burkhart, Reading, and three grandchildren: Joshua Buchalter, Bradley Buchalter and Jonathan Potts.

He was predeceased by a brother, Glenn L. Burkhart. ^[1]
