Biography

No baptism has been found for William Thomas Bennett, but it is clear from his will, and the relationships that he cites with family members, that he was the son of Alexander and Ann.

William worked with his father as a slopseller (dealer in ready made clothes). In 1819, under the terms of his father Alexander's will, he was left half of his father's business together with £200 of Navy stock. He was also executor and joint beneficiary to his mother Ann's estate when she died in 1825.

William never married.

In 1841, he was living in the family home in West Street, Gravesend

William died in West Street, Gravesend and was buried in Gravesend, St George's on 5 June 1843. He was 60 years old [2] [3]

His will was signed on 23 July 1827, and was granted probate on 24 June 1843, and names [4]

  1. John Bennett, his brother
  2. Nancy, the wife of William Peck, who was his sister
  3. William Alexander Bennett, his nephew
  4. Alexander Bennett, his nephew
  5. Mary Bennett, his sister, residue of the estate
  6. John Matthews, his friend, a solicitor
  7. and after Mary's death, the estate should pass to his brother John and sister Nancy Peck

Several of the beneficiaries of William's estate pre-deceased him, but he failed to update his will accordingly.
