Alexander Bennett was born in 1745 in Gravesend, Kent, the son of Joseph Bennett. He was baptised at St George's church on 9th October of that year [1]
He was apprenticed on 28th March 1760 to Leonard May, Waterman, and obtained his freedom on 24th July 1767.
Two years later, on 28 May 1769, he married Ann Ward in St Saviour's church, Southwark, Surrey [2]
His name appears as a householder in the 1790 Electoral register for Gravesend. [3]
And also in the trade directory for Gravesend, dated 1790, as a master slopseller, the definition of which is 'a dealer in cheap ready made clothing'.
He died in Gravesend in March 1819, and was buried in St. George's churchyard on 12 Mar 1819 [4]
His will was written in March 1819, and proven on 9th July of that year.
