Tom was born in 1896 in Gorey, Ireland. He was the son of Scottish parents: Robert Bain and Bessie Leggett. He was raised a Presbyterian.
Tom spent his early childhood living in Hampshire, England, but spent most of his childhood living in County Kildare, Ireland. Tom immigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1913 at age 15. Just like the rest of his family, Thomas settled in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
Tom enlisted in the military for World War 1, on January 9, 1917 at age 18. He was in the 243 Battalion, the 5th Battalion (infantry) of the North Saskatchewan Regiment. After the war ended in 1918, Tom returned to his family in Prince Albert.
Tom married Jeanette Messinger on September 1, 1932 in Saskatoon. They moved to a farm in Henribourg. Together they had two children: A son, Alan "Floyd", and a daughter, Shirley-Mae. Eventually, the family moved to Victoria, BC.
Tom passed away in 1947, while living in Victoria. He was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.
