Biography

Joseph Bailey, the third in succession with this name, was born in West Newbury in 1711, the eldest son of Joseph Bailey and Abigail Webster.[1][2][3] He was baptized 6 Apr 1712 in Bradford.[4] He grew up with three younger brothers and three younger sisters and was eighteen years old when Elizabeth his youngest sister was born. Joseph and his brothers and sisters lived with their parents in that (western) part of Newbury that was set off in 1695 as the Second Parish, so probably attended the schools that were established there in 1716-17.

In 1723, Joseph and all in his family survived what was known as the "saddest year ever known in Newbury", with a lethal sickness taking two to three lives a day, as many as 40 in a single month (April).[5]

On March 15, 1732/33, he married Martha Boynton, the daughter of Sgt. Richard Boynton and Sarah Dresser,[6] born 2 April 1710 in Rowley. The Dressers and Boyntons were early settlers of Rowley, like the Baileys, and the families had a number of inter-relationships.

After a short residence in Bradford, it is clear that Joseph and Martha settled for several years in Tewksbury, notwithstanding the assertion of Alfred Poor (reference below) that they had settled in Newbury Town (explains why Mr. Poor had blanks for all the childrens' birth dates). Joseph's father referred to him in his 1761 will as "the late Joseph Bayley of Tewksbury". The couple had the seven following children between 1733 and 1747, the first recorded in the birth records of Bradford, but all seven recorded in the records of Tewksbury:[7]

  1. Sarah, b. 20 Dec 1733; m. Micah Carleton, 12 Apr. 1753
  2. Nathan, b. 4 Dec 1735; m. Sarah Pillsbury, 8 Feb. 1757; d. 1819
  3. Martha, b. 1 Jan 1737; m. Ezra Pillsbury, 29 Nov. 1759
  4. Richard, b. 3 Dec 1739; m. Susannah Pillsbury, 1763; d. 18 Mar. 1812
  5. Asa, b. 1 Nov 1744; m. Abigail Chase, 26 Nov. 1767; d. 13 Mar. 1828
  6. Abigail, twin b. 16 Aug 1747; m. Joseph Noyes, 12 June 1766
  7. Elizabeth, twin b. 16 Aug 1747; m. Daniel Chase.

Joseph passed away on 13 November 1748 at the young age of 37 after "catching cold from digging a well for his brother Samuel".[8] His children were put into the custody of his brother Ezekiel. [9]

Bailey III-2 and Bailey-8472 appear to represent the same person because: Potential duplicate - same spouse. Merge must go into Bailey-8472 which has the proper profile / LNAB naming convention. The other one is incorrect.
