Biography

John Andrews, eldest son of John and Judith (Belcher) Andrews, was born at Ipswich, Massachusetts [1] in about 1680. [2]

He followed his father in the trade of house carpenter. [2]

  • 1714: His father John Sr. gave each of his sons 110 acres, all of his property excepting 20 acres he reserved for himself during his life time. [2]
  • 1716: Made freeman at Norwich, Connecticut. [1]
  • 1729: One of the collectors at Norwich. [1]
  • This family probably lived in Long Society, a community of Norwich, but some distance from the town, that was allowed to hire it's own minister and establish schools. [1]

He married first on February 20, 1707/8, Sarah Cook [3] daughter of Richard Cook. [1][2]

His wife Sarah died at Norwich, Connecticut on May 17, 1724. [3] [1] [2]

After Sarah's death, John married second on September 30, 1724, Ruth Gates [3], daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Freeman) Gates, who had lived in Stow, Marlborough, and Sudbury, Massachusetts and had removed to Preston, Connecticut about 1703. [1] [2]

John died at Preston, Connecticut about 1750.[1] [2]

  2. Sarah, born January 9, 1712/13 [3]; died August 16, 1788; married on December 10, 1733, Samuel Palmer who was born at Rowley, Massachusetts on November 20, 1712 and died at Norwich May 21, 1761. [1]
  3. Jane, born June 26, 1716 [3] died March 21, 1803; married on January 10, 1733/4, Josiah Corning, who was born at Beverly, Massachusetts on November 15, 1709 and died at Norwich, February 26, 1760, son of Joseph and Rebecca (Woodbury) Corning. [1]
  4. Grace, baptized at Preston, Connecticut on September 27, 1718. [4] [1]
  5. Thankful, born September 20, 1719 [3]; married on September 16, 1740, Joseph Read 3rd, who was born at Norwich on May 23, 1709, son of Joseph and Mary Read. [1]
  6. Joseph, born June 26, 1722 [3]; died about 1798; wife unknown, but had 4 children. [1]

  1. Anne, born June 6, 1725 [3]; died at Griswold, Connecticut on October 20, 1809; married on May 25, 1742, Simon Brewster, son of Benjamin, baptized at Preston on July 17, 1720; died at Griswold June 29, 1801. [1]
  2. Dorcas, born September 24, 1728 [3]; married Barnabas Lathrop on April 23, 1752, as his third wife. (p. 108) [1]
  3. Isaac, (Capt.) born on April 22, 1731[3]; died at Shaftsbury, Vermont, June 30, 1824; married first about 1753, Elizabeth Tracy, who was born at Norwich on January 21, 1731/2 and died at Shaftsbury on August 27, 1771. Isaac married second at Shaftsbury, Truelove Oatman who died on January 4, 1806. He married thirdly, Mrs. Anna Spencer, widow of Isaac and fourthly Mrs, Freelove Wilcox Parks. [1]
  4. Jacob, born on April 9, 1734 [3]; was corporal in the French and Indian War, was promoted to be sergeant in 1757. [1]

Probate

His will is dated 23 January 1747/48 in Norwich, New London, and proved on 4 October 1751 in Norwich. He is a yeoman and mentions his wife Ruth, his sons, John Jr., Joseph, Isaac, and Jacob, and his daughters, Sarah, wife of Samuel Palmer of Norwich, Jane, wife of Josiah Corning of Norwich, Thankful, wife of Joseph Read of Norwich, and Dorcas.[5]

His date of death, 7 September 1751 is recorded in the heading of his inventory.[5]

His inventory was completed on 19 October 1751. It included his home lot and land in Windham. He had a supply of oak board, cedar shingles, and livestock (including 19 sheep).[5]

On 12 March 1752, the real estate distribution was set out to his sons, John (eldest son), Joseph, Isaac, and Jacob.[5]
