Biography

John Andrews was born about 1680 in Rappahannock, Virginia. His parents were James Andrews and Elizabeth Starkey.

John lived in At. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia where he was a planter and cooper. He acquired and sold property most of his life. ^[1] He also inherited from his father 519 acres in 1684. Deeds, pgs 397-399, 10 April 1707: John Andrews of St Ann's Parish, Essex County, planter, to Augustine Smith of same, Gent., for 2 lbs sterling one acre on the west side of Occupation Swamp or Run (opposite to the the acre of land belonging to Augustine Smith which he lately purchased of Capt. Edward Rowzee) in St Ann's Parish......

He had three wives:

1. Hannah Tharpe married about 1707 Essex, Virginia
2. Anne Stockdale married about 1717 Essex, Virginia
3. Mary Wyatt (maiden name unverified)

Arnold Motley, Essex County Circuit Court Clerk, claims that children Agnes, Hannah, and John were by John Sr.'s first wife Hannah Tharpe (or Thorpe), and children Thomas, Mark and Mary were by his second wife, Ann Stockdale, daughter of Phillip Stockdale. Mary Andrews was John's third wife, whose maiden name may have been either Stockdale or Wyatt (proof not seen at this time).

John's third wife, Mary, married Alexander Anderson, after John's death in about 1754. Mary is in the Essex County VA Deeds Book #12, p. 172; and Deed Book #30, p 175 where she is mentioned as "Mother-in-Law of John Andrews and widow of his father, John Andrews." -^[2][3][4]

John died before 19 November 1754 in St. Anne's Parish, Essex, Virginia, when his will was proved in court. He was 74 years old. John Andrews' will was dated August 13, 1748, and proved on November 19 1754, ^{[5] [6]} His burial was in Loretto, Essex, Virginia. ^[7]
