Mary Andrews was born on 5 March 1921 in Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia, United States, daughter of Fred Douglas Andrews (1897–1982) and Susanna Hill (1900–>1950).[1][2]
While she was still small, her family left Georgia for Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. There, she lived with her parents, her grandfather, and her aunt and uncle in a house on Casmere. In 1930, she was eight years old and was attending school.[1]
By 1940, her family had moved to a house on Harold Avenue in Detroit. She was eighteen then, and had five younger siblings. She had completed high school by then, though she was not working.[3]
Mary and James Reynolds Tyler were married on 5 October 1941 in Detroit.[4] James was born on 30 May 1918 in Springfield, Blount, Tennessee, United States, the son of Willie Tyler and Janie Reynolds. They had three children.
It appears that it was some time after her marriage that she began to use the name "Judy".
In 1950, Judy and the children were living in a house on McDougall in Detroit with her divorced sister Frances and her two children. Judy indicated that she was separated from her husband. Neither of the women were working at that time, and they each had a child under a year old.[5]
It appears that she and James were reconciled some time shortly after, and she was working as a beautician.[6]
Judy died on 28 October 1951 at their home in Detroit, aged 30.[6][2]
