Biography

Douglas Andrews is a part of US Black heritage.

Fred Douglas Andrews was born on 7 September 1897 in Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia, United States. He may have been the son of Charles Andrews and his wife Rachel.[1]

He married Susannah Hill on 6 July 1918 in Baldwin County, Georgia.[2] They had the following known children:

  1. Judy "Mary" Andrews (1921– 1951)
  2. Douglas Andrews (1920s– 2010s)
  3. Leo Andrews (1920s–2010s)
  4. Harold Andrews (1927–1983)
  5. Frances Andrews (1930s–2000s)
  6. Lorenzo Andrews (1932–1935)[3]
  7. Lois Andrews (1930s–2000s)

At first, they lived on North Clark Street in Milledgeville, where he worked in construction.[4]

During they 1920s, they became part of the Great Migration, leaving Georgia for work in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan in about 1926. The 1930 census showed them living on Cosmere in Detroit with their five children, along with Susannah's father, brother and sister, and their niece. Douglas had a job as a bricklayer.[5]

In 1940, they owned a house on Harold Avenue in Detroit. Douglas was still working as a bricklayer[6]

He registered for the draft for World War II, though does not appear to have been selected.[1]

In 1950, Fred and Susie were in the same house on Harold Avenue. He listed his occupation as construction contractor, while his son Douglas worked as a bricklayer.[7]

Fred died on 3 January 1982 in Detroit, aged 84.[8][9]

Research Notes

  • There is a Fred D Andrews who was also born in 1897 in Georgia. He also died in 1982, but in Georgia—not Michigan. It seems like the trees on FamilySearch may have them conflated, making it difficult to be certain of Douglas's origins. Rounsefell-5 18:06, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
