WPA Slave Project

During the Depression, the Works Progess Administration created a Born in Slavery writers’ project. This covered over 2300 first hand accounts of slavery in 17 states. See https://www.loc.gov/collections/slave-narratives-from-the-federal-writers-project-1936-to-1938/about-this-collection/ for the records that have been digitized.

There are some very sad stories, but it is an excellent source of information.

Thanks Cindy! Amazing stories to be found there.

The US Black Heritage Project has a team page of these Narratives and profiles created. Many of the states have been completed.
