Is there a Wikitree page describing a universal format for giving slaves last names?

David that is a good question... To my knowledge no!  In the past the slave was usually address by the current owners name...   i.e. Andy Caruthers was owned by Jim Caruthers and was given to his daughter who married Fount Odell and once with the new master Andy Odell was his name...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Odell-3481

After Slavery ended in 1865 most ex-slaves took on surnames that they preferred such as Freeman, Smith, or even Gullins which was used after an ex-slave witnessed a clown show in 1867...

That is the only information I have at this time...  maybe someone else will read your question and answer...

Hope this helps

David I just reached out to Emma MacBeath she is the heavy on the Black Heritage Projects...  she may know... I cannot locate one at this time...
Yes, I have many questions about the best way to handle these profiles. Here is an example: I've just created Banta-1432. From the 1900 Census, I see that he is a person of color. I suspect he descends from people owned by Banta -318, my third gg. But there are no names given on Slave schedules, so no proof. And no way to connect him. Should there be a way to connect him? Should they even be connected? By his name, I know he was owned by one of my ancestors.

A tag, a category that identifies descendants of slaves?

I think it is important to get more people of color represented on WikiTree. What is the best way to handle these?

David how I use 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules is simple...  take the age and sex of the person and compare it to Banta-1432 and see if either works out.  You can also add the the African /Black Heritage badge to the profile found in this profile...  I also used the 1850 slave schedule in this profile

Let me know if this is helpful...

I hope the Black Heritage Project will write such a page for giving slaves a last name. I want to be sure not to offend anyone in the future, and neither do we want to be creating duplicate profiles based on different naming conventions. There may not be a clear cut method for naming our Black citizens who were enslaved, but to have an official page by the project will at least make all the relevant profiles consistent while reducing duplicates.

Another possibility could be to select a specific term for enslaved persons who have no last names. Just as Wikitree uses the term "Unknown" when the last name is not known, the term "Slave" or "Enslaved Person" could be used for all such profiles. It would make it easier to identify all such persons on Wikitree, and if such a term is included as the last name, it will catch a reader's attention that the biography may likely have additional details.

Also, on the edit page of any profile, when a parent is given, there are options for "non-biological," "uncertain," and others. Another option for this list could say, "Slave owner" and the slave owner could then be connected to the slave's profile but be treated as non-biological, the same as a step parent. Also, where the children of the slave owner are listed, a separate list will give the names of the slaves who are connected to the profile.
David we (wikitree) are not naming them...   Their names were given before slavery and they had the option back in the 1800 to change their names a will...

I understand what you are saying, however to just assign a name to persons will not happen...  that is why there is a BRICK WALL with enslaved persons in the ealry 1800s...

With this in mind I strongly suggest you reach out to Emma MacBeath and voice this issue...  I have already altered her to the fact that you have a question.

sorry I could not be of anymore help on this issue.
Welp, I can't figure out how to connect the profile I created to the free space page. And, I've discovered many for KY have been created, but not connected. Scruggs -1258, Mayfield -2532, Woods-14720 and many more. In fact, I had trouble finding subjects from KY that did not already have profiles!(haha I always have these little technical challenges that make me feel dumb).

Laurie,

Did you get my private email to you?   If not let me know....
Sorry, no email from you.
Hi all, The US Black Heritage Project did adopt naming conventions for slaves last summer. We're getting ready to tweak them a little bit, but the basic premise is the same. Also, I'm waiting for the template mentioned to go live. Until then, we are using the category [[Category: USBH Heritage Exchange, Needs LNAB]] on profiles when a placeholder last name at birth is used.  Here's the page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Naming_Conventions_for_Slaves
Thank you, Emma. I have made a link to the page for future reference.

Thank you!

Thank you! Please reach out to me if you have any questions...  Did you pick a profile to work on yet?
So far I have been reading, the accounts are so compelling, I keep thinking, I’ll just read one more. But I think I will settle on David Goodman Gullins to start with.
Perfect! Take your time it is not going anywhere!  If you have questions please reach out to me!

Thanks for this. I have come across numerous records of slaves  in Dutch Reformed Church records (marriages, baptisms, confessions of faith), as well as black people with my surname in neighboring households of my ancestors (Bourbon, KY, for example) and was wondering how to get them onto WikiTree. Definitely want to work on this project.

Hello Gene, I would like to create a profile for this project. Could you point me to  one I could make or show me how to determine one to make? Thanks.

Gina why sure!
How about we set you up with "Abe Whitess" interviewed in Alabama...

You can use this link for the Interview and point you in the right direction...

https://memory.loc.gov/mss/mesn/010/010.pdf?  Page 429

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/36020/36020-h/36020-h.html#abe-whitess

There is also a digital photo of "Abe Whitess" available... if you need help with adding the photo to the profile please let me know...

This is yours...  I usually don't make changes, however I may ask you to add additional information when available...
I have created Whitess-1 and uploaded his photo. I am wondering if I should  indicate somewhere that I have created his profile, besides here :)
Go to the Free space page: Space:  Freedmen Narratives ( use link above) and edit him into his spot on that page. I figured out how by looking at the other examples. I also found other profiles that had been created but not yet linked and added them. Maybe someone else who actually knows these thi gs will exp!ain it better. ( :
EXCELLENT Laurie!
Gina - thank you so much for that! Excellent
Thank you. I found where to do it! I probably need to have a lesson on correctly formatting the link to their profiles, but I did create a link with their ID.

All going forward please review the U.S. Black Heritage Program page for heritage exchange issues...

Slave Owners & Slaves

Wow! This is wonderful. It is quite a bit of information and new tasks/challenges. I think you need a new feed for this, if there isn't any (my search was nil). Slave Owners and Slaves.
It is being put out all over wikitree.com in the near future...  we need to be onboard before everyone else...

Just completed my first profile, all comments welcome. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Childress-2075 and added to Tennessee on Free space page.

Connie Excellent!  Thank you!   I love the way you laid it out!

Are you familiar with U.S. Black Heritage Exchange Program

*** NOTE *** GOING FORWARD *** NOTE ***
Please go to the link and review...  At the least please create a profile for Jane Scales (nee: Bosley) and link her to Wiley Childress when you have time...

If you have questions please reach out to me or review Jennie Cayce for the link between her and the enslaved persons of her family.

Thanks in advance!

BTW if the Slave Owner/Holder has been created in WIKITREE then when you link your enslaved/ex-slave persons leave a comment in the notes/comment section of the profile and the link to the U.S. Black Heritage Exchange Program and move forward with the process...

Thanks, Gene! I started researching the Scales Boxley/Bosley families already and wanted to have a little more information before I created their profiles. This is on my list for next weekend!

Connie
