James Smith was born in County Durham, England.

James Smith of Thorp was baptised in St. James the Greater, Grindon, on 20 August 1777 and was the son of Henry Smith and Jane Armstrong.[1]


James married Ann Lynn on 8 May 1806 and they had eight children.[2][3]

  5. Elizabeth (Smith) Crawford (1814–1865)

On the 1841 census, James, a farmer, and Ann are living in Great Stainton, Stockton, with their children: William (30 years), Elizabeth (25 years), Henry (25 years), Maria (20 years), James (20 years).[4]

On the 1851 census, James, a farmer, and Ann are living in Great Stainton, Stockton, with their children: William (40 years), Henry (36 years) and Maria (34 years). They also have their granddaughter, Lettice Smith, aged 2 years, with them.[5]

James Smith died, aged 80 years, on 17 June 1858 and was buried in St. Cuthbert's, Redmarshall.[6]
