James Smith was baptised in Norton, Durham, on 13 April 1820 and was the youngest son of James Smith and Ann Lynn.[1]
On the 1841 census, James is living in Great Stainton, Stockton, with his parents and siblings: William (30 years), Elizabeth (25 years), Henry (25 years) and Maria (20 years).[2]
James married Lettice Elizabeth Clues in the town of Gateshead on 6 November 1847 and they had five children.[3]
On the 1851 census, James, a farmer, and Lettice are living in Great Stainton, Durham, with their daughter, Maria, who is 2 months. Their eldest daughter, Lettice, is with her paternal grandparents.[4]
On the 1861 census, James, an agricultural labourer, and Lettice are living on Linacres Farm, Sedgefield, Durham, with their children: Maria (10 years), James (7 years) and Susan (4 years). Their eldest daughter, Lettice, is with her paternal grandparents.[5]
James Smith died of angina, aged 41 years, on 17 April 1861.[6][7]
