How did the Johnson surname come into the Custer family (Nevin Johnson Custer)

Usually this comes from the mother's line to ensure that the name does not die out. My uncle had his mother's surname asa Christian name. In the UK, it tends to be a working or artisan class custom. So check your client's mother's line and that of his/her father's female ancestry for starters.
