Monabee was born about 1850 in Africa. She was kidnapped from Africa and smuggled into the USA aboard the ship Clotilda on July 9, 1860 and enslaved until emancipation. The Clotilda was the last known ship to bring captives from Africa to the United States. Slave trading was illegal in the USA at this time.
Monabee's American name was Kate or Katie. She married Elmore Cooper some time before 1870, then Richard Cooper in 1872. It appears she did not have any biological children, but adopted Annie Wilkerson.
Note:
At this time, naming conventions have not been written for African Tribes before the time of last names. Therefore, the name of Monabee's tribe has been used as her LNAB at this time following Native American standards. This can be changed as needed when naming conventions are written. On her 1872 marriage record, her last name is written as Meaher which is crossed out and then Thomas is written. There were two Meahers who acquired slaves from the Clotilda. One of them is likely the slave owner for Kate.
