Florence (Yates) Delore was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Biography

Florence was born on 4 May 1889 in the Dungog district. She was the daughter of George Yates and Harriet Griffin. [1]

She married her first cousin, Aaron Alfred Yates (1884-1933) in 1906, in the Stroud district. [2]

In February, 1924, Florence appeared in the Small Debts Court. She had purchased a piano and stool at auction and arranged delivery to their home at Dudley. The piano was delivered but not the stool. The carter refused to deliver the piano stool at one pound was still owing, that Florence had withheld until it was delivered. The court gave the plaintiff a verdict of three pounds plus costs. [3]

Florence appeared in the Newcastle Police Court next, in August 1927. While out in town with baby Shirley, she placed her handbag in the pram after picking crying Shirley up out of the pram. Her handbag was stolen. Luckily the thieves were arrested, found guilty and ordered to pay Florence reparation. [4]

Her husband, Aaron, was a carpenter, working on housing construction at Hawkes Nest and Myall Lakes. [5] [6] They lived at Wickham at the time of the 1930 Electoral Rolls and at Mayfield in 1933. [7] [8]

In late July, 1933, Aaron was working on building a house at Tea Gardens, when he fell from the roof and fractured his spine. [9] Sadly he succumbed to his injuries on 28 August, 1933 and was buried at Tea Gardens Cemetery, Tea Gardens. [10]

The following year, Florence married Clarence Bede De Lore (1887-1958) in the Newcastle district. [11] She lived at Tea Gardens. [12]

Florence was involved with her local P & C Association, and donated a gift for the adult section of a juvenile dance evening held at the Australia Hall. [13]

Tragically, in May 1945, Florence and Aaron's daughter Shirley was accidentally killed in a car accident. She was travelling with three other friends to a picnic at Paterson, when the driver lost control of the car and collided with an oncoming car. Florence died in Maitland hospital. [14] Probate for Aaron's will was finally granted to Florence in May 1947. [15]

The following year, we learn Clarence (known as Clarrie) was an engineer at Allan Taylor's sawmill and had worked there for many years. He'd torn an arm muscle at work. [16] A few months later, in 1948, Florence had an operation on her throat in the Mater Hospital, Newcastle. She was home again and “going along as well as can be expected”. [17]

She had recovered well by December 1949 and attended a fancy dress ball organised by the P & C Assocation at Tea Gardens. It was well attended, with two hundred adults being present. The ladies “in the hall enjoying the fun as if they were the young, but most of them with grandchildren" and included Mrs C. Delore. [18]

Florence was also a member of the Tea Gardens Ladies' Fishing Club and was reported to have won a number of competitions. [19] [20]

Her husband Clarence passed away in 1958 and is buried at the Tea Gardens Cemetery. [21]

Florence passed away about on 15 August 1971 aged 82 years. [22] She is buried with Aaron and their daughter Shirley at Tea Gardens Cemetery. [23]
