Biography

Lavina was born on 17 September, 1900 in the Stroud disctrict. She was the daughter of George Yates and Harriet Griffin. [1]

By the time she was 18 years old, the family lived in Craven. Lavina and her sister, Myrtle performed at the Public School concert held each year before the Christmas break-up. God Save the King was sung, speeches and dialogues were given, a school cantata, and many songs and duets were sung. Lavina and Myrtle played the Overture "Orphans Gallop" together on the piano; Myrtle also accompanied others. Their brother Arthur and other Yates cousins also performed. George and Harriet were thanked for the use of their piano. [2]

Two years later, Lavina (known as Lavena) was engaged to be married. Her friends from Craven gave her a Kitchen Tea at her parents' home. Parlor games and dancing were part of the entertainment. Lavena's sisters Myrtle and Corena (known as Corrie) played the piano for accompaniment, "Mr E Yates rendered a humorous recitation" and songs were sung by, including younger sister Ivy. [3]

Lavena and Raymond Sydney Osland married at the Craven Union Church on 8 June, 1921. [4] Raymond was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Osland of Bellingen. Reverend E. Wilkinson officiated. The bridesmaid was Lavena's sister, Myrtle, and the best man was her brother, Percy. Corrie played the wedding march while the register was being signed and Ivy sang "Because". After their honeymoon in Bellingen, they returned to live in Stratford. [5]

By 1934 Raymond and Lavena had moved to Wakivory, Gloucester where they farmed. [6]

They had moved to Kalang, near Bellingen by 21 April, 1942 when Raymond enlisted in the Australian Military Forces for World War II. He was a dairy farmer. Their son Keith had also enlisted as the newspaper reported his visit to home when on leave in February, 1943. [7]

Their eldest daughter, Enid was married after the war in June, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Bellingen. [8]

Two months later, the newspaper reports Lavena and Raymond having returned home from visiting family in Gloucester. [9] Electoral Rolls show they continued to live on the farm at Kalang until at least 1972. Raymond was retired by then and they lived in town at Bellingen. [10]

Raymond died in Bellingen on 8 April, 1982, aged 85 years [11] He was buried at the Bellingen General Cemetery, [12] Lavena joined him on 3 March, 1990 after passing away in the Coffs Harbour district, aged 89 years. [13] She was buried next to Raymond. [14]
