In December he was deployed to Italy where he was stationed with the 100th Fighter Squadron, 322nd Fighter Group in Ramitelli.

On April 15, the 332nd Fighter Group moved from Montecorvino, Italy, to Capodichino near Naples. On April 18, Beryl's P-39 Airacobra took heavy enemy fire while on a bombing mission. When he tried to land the plane, he crashed just short of the runway. Lulu received a wire telling her that he had been hospitalized with injuries.
