When Joseph Lenore Wood* was born in 1821 in Cooper, Missouri, his father, Andrew, was 30, and his mother, Jane, was 27. He married Tabitha Dorcas / Dorkis /Dorkas Mooney in 1841 in Morgan, Missouri. They had six children in 15 years. He died on March 3, 1897, in Osage, Missouri, having lived a long life of 76 years, and was buried in Morgan, Missouri.
The first source we have for Joseph is a land record for land in Morgan County, Missouri, on 1 Jun 1845. We are not sure this is our Joseph Wood, but it is plausible. .[1]
In the year 1850, Joseph Wood was listed in the census as Joseph Woods, a common mistake even in this day and age. He was listed as living in District 58, Moniteau, Missouri, USA, and he is listed as a farmer, and his real estate was $100. His wife Tabitha was listed as unable to read and write, and her name was written as Dorcas. She lists her birth state as Tennessee.
1860 Joseph and his family were in Township 45 Range 14, Moniteau, Missouri. Again, he is listed as Joseph Woods and not Joseph Wood. He is still farming, and his real estate value was $40. Husband and wife both list that they can not read or write. In this census, Tabitha is listed as Tobitha Woods, and her birth state is listed as Ohio.
Joseph lived in Osage, Morgan, Missouri, with his family in the 1870 census. He is still farming. His son Andrew J. Wood is living next door, and so are the McGinnes and Sidebottom families. He is listed as unable to read and write. His wife Tabitha was listed as Darcas Woods and was born in Tennessee.
