Biography

National Flag of Wales
Thomas Wogan was born in Wales.

Thomas was son and heir of John Wogan.[1] the justiciary, became escheator of Ireland in 1338.

His father is Sir John Wogan and he also has a brother John who first succeeds their father Sir John and then after Thomas' brother John's death, Thomas is next to succeed after him.

It is possible that Thomas' brother John never became justiciary of Ireland himself. Some confuse their father's possible two terms with assigning Thomas' brother John with the second term. And some confuse Thomas' brother thinking he was father to Thomas not brother too. Anyone with real documentary proof is welcome to add to this.

As far as I can tell Sir John Wogan did both terms with a break while a higher official was in Dublin for a year or so. Then it looks like the next in line John Wogan does not become justiciary, and eventually Thomas Wogan does. Quall-1 lives in USA so limited access to documents and history of Ireland, Wales and England.

________________

While Thomas Wogan is the justiciary, he is instructed to look into inheritance matters of the claims of Eleanor De Bohun Butler - widow of James Butler 1st Earl of Ormond - regarding property Eleanor wants designated as the inheritance of her and her heirs. Thomas finds after the inquisition that Eleanor is indeed entitled to these lands and they are given to Eleanor. I think this establishes a link between the Butler and Wogan families to indicate that the possibility of the future marriage of Thomas Wogan's great grandson John Wogan to Eleanor's great granddaughter Anne Butler is not an impossible assertion. Quall-1 _______________

Thomas Wogan goes through his own struggles while he is in service for the King and a dispute arises about payment for defense of Castle property of the King. John Watte becomes Thomas' attorney while Thomas is at the sea coast of Wales with men defending against attacks of the King's enemies. While Thomas was escheator of Ireland, there was question if he was in arrears and they eventually find that Thomas has not been paid his fee for guarding Clomore Castle. If Thomas had been found in arrears his attorney John Watte would have been put in prison until the debt was paid. Looks like things worked out okay.

Research Notes

Agnes/Annes Werriot: Mother attached to this profile prior to 15 October 2023 was for Agnes/Annes Werriot, who married a different John Wogan, not related to the Justiciar who was father of Thomas (born 1311). Her profile was detached.
