Biography

William "Langloo" Winston was born in Hanover - his sister, Sarah b 1710 & Lucy b 1711-12 - are both listed as "older than he".

His wife was Sarah Dabney born about 1718 in King William County, the daughter of George Dabney (1673-1734) Will dated 24 Oct 1729 King William - That my crops of tobacco be sent yearly to England & to be applied to the maintenance of my wife & 2 daughters, Sarah & Judith Dabney. After the death of my wife my remaining negroes be divided between my daughters Sarah & Judith.

(Baker-53780 This abstract listed the bequest to his daughter Susanna. I changed it to the bequest to daughter Sarah)

Baker-53780 John Blair Dabney MSS -

  • "Whether Col. William Dabney had any brothers, I never remember to have heard, but I know he had a sister Sarah who inter-married with Mr. William Winston. She was the mother of Edmund Winston, afterwards a judge of the General Court and of two daughters, Mrs. Fontaine and Mrs. Walker - all of whom were endowed with excellent capacities and were very worthy people. My mother was well acquainted with Mrs. Winston for some years before that lady's death. She resided at that time with her son, Judge Winston in the vicinity of Lynchburg."

Proof of death of Col. William "Langloo Winston of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover not long before 1771 - He is frequently listed as "Jr" to distinguish from his 1st cousin - William "Essex" Winston who was older & his mother was the older Sarah Dabney, daughter of Cornelius and Aunt of Sarah Dabney wife of "Langloo" There are letters & other records for "Langloo" through the late 1760's. -

Deed from William Coles of St. Paul's Parish Hanover Co. to his daughter Mary Payne, in consideration of the love he bears her he lends her during her natural life and at her death to go to his grandson William Temple Payne, a tract of land bought of William Winston, Jr., dec'd. on the north side of the south branch of the forks of Pamunkey River in Hanover Co., containing 176 acres adjoining said Coles, said Winston, John Gray, Aylett and known by the name of Schoolhouse. - Witnesses; Isaac Winston Gent. Lucy Coles, Giles Retcher, John Boswell & William Brown. Sept. 5, 1771. p-110.

NOTE: William Coles was married to Langloo's sister Lucy Winston - their daughter Mary (Coles) Payne was the mother of Dolly (Payne) Madison, wife of the President.

      • Edmund son of "Langloo" on13 Mar 1774 - Letter of Judge Edmund Winston to Col. William Preston, surveyor of Fincastle Co. He has authorized + William Henry to enter 2,000 acres to which he is entitled through his father's service as a Lieut. of Capt. Overton's Company. (+Patrick Henry's older brother)

    • Patrick Henry could have learned much from his fabled Uncle William Winston, called since childhood, "Langloo", who lived at least half the year (sometimes more) in remote mountain cabins, hunting deer and trading with the distant Indians around Browns Cove, today in Albemarle. Langloo preferred deer and trading with the distant Indians and folks on the frontier. Langloo preferred buckskin to broadcloth & kept his distance from polite society. It is often reported that he had the gifts of oratory and style equal to his nephew but did not choose to use them.

The Winston Walker family tree images attached to this profile are of a tree made circa 1981 and based on the personal records and oral history given by Benjamin Watson Walker, Jr. (b. 1918, Alabama). It's accurate as to descendants closer to its author, but in William Winston's generation this tree conflicts with the relationships described by 18th and 19th century Virginia sources.

Sarah Dabney Winston (Henry) [Winston-28] was widely reported to have been William Winston's sister, not his wife, and was also the mother of noted patriot Patrick Henry.

Lt. William "Langloo Billy" was named in the will of his father, Capt. Isaac Winston, in his will of 1760. He fought in the French and Indian War. He was the Uncle of Patrick Henry.

Winston-669 and Winston-48 appear to represent the same person because: Birth year of Winston-669 is an estimate, but these appear to be intended to represent the same person.

Different grandmother. Winston-48 shows Margaret Delton. Information from Tribal Historian William Deyo suggests that the grandmother of Winston-1021 may have actually been Betty West.

Winston-852 and Winston-360 appear to represent the same person because: Hi, I'm a William Winston descendant, through Mary Ann (Winston) Walker. My family had a lengthy tree done (with him at the head) that I've been working into the WikiTree format.

Our tree (which I believe was commissioned ca. 1980), has a few inconsistencies in Winston's generation (e.g., his wife's name), but I believe it's the same person.
