Biography

Rebecca Elizabeth Wine was born about July of 1819 [her tombstone says she was born in 1818] in Rockingham County, Virginia, USA. Her parents were George Wine and Rebecca Ann Williams Wine.

Her father was a farmer and a preacher.

Rebecca was commonly referred to as "Elizabeth".

Research shows that George and Rebecca Wine had at least 9 children. The ones known to have been born to them are as follows: James (born abt. 1812), Benjamin Beniah (born abt. 1813), Rebecca Elizabeth (born abt. 1819), Sarah Jane (born abt. 1827), Nancy (born abt. 1826), John Payton (born about 1825), David Smyth (born Nov. 27, 1829), Mary Ann (born abt. 1830), and Christina (born abt. 1833).

George Wine also had at least 6 children from a previous marriage (evidenced by early census record tabulations). The names of these children are as yet unknown.

George and Rebecca Wine lived with their family in Rockingham County, Virginia, from 1820 to sometime between 1830 and 1840, when they moved to Braxton County, Virginia.

Rebecca Elizabeth Wine married Chrisman Conrad on Jan. 10, 1839, in Braxton County, VA.

Chrisman was born about 1810 in Harrison County, Virginia, the son of Daniel Conrad and Margaret Shields Conrad.

Rebecca Elizabeth Wine Conrad is recorded in the 1900's US Census as having had 13 children. Only 10 of these children are known of at this time. It is believed that Chrisman Conrad was the father of all 13. The children that are known to have been born to the couple are as follows: Sarah Ann Conrad (born abt. 1837), Minerva Jane Conrad (born abt. 1839), John S. Conrad (born abt. 1843), Elzara M. Conrad (born Feb. 9, 1844), Margaret Ruhana Conrad (born Oct. 4, 1846), Shelton C. Conrad (born abt. 1849), Thaddeus G. Conrad (born May 12, 1853), Caleb Marion Conrad (born July 21, 1855), Benjamin K. Conrad (born Feb. of 1858), and Luverna or Laverna Conrad (born Nov. 5, 1860). All were born in Braxton County, Virginia.

According to the 1840 US Census Tabulation, Chrisman and Elizabeth Conrad lived in Braxton County, Virginia, along with (daughter under the age of 5), presumed to be Sarah Ann. Their daughter, Minerva Jane is not listed. Perhaps she was not yet born, or not listed because she was an infant. Also living in the household is a male (age 15-20). This is believed to be Lemuel Lemon Conrad, Chrisman's brother, as he does not seem to appear anywhere else In the 1840 Census.

This census also shows that Chrisman and Elizabeth lived close to the following Conrad households: John Conrad [Chrisman's uncle], Jacob P. Conrad [relationship unclear], Benjamin Conrad [Chrisman's uncle],and Jno B. Conrad [John Benjamin Conrad, Chrisman's brother].

According to the 1850 US Census, Chrisman Conrad (age 38, and head of household) lived in Braxton County, VA, along with his wife, Elizabeth (25), their children: Sarah Ann (11), Manerva Jane (9), John S. (7), Elzay (5), Ruhana (3), and Shelton (2). Also living with them were Elizabeth's brothers: Smith [David Smyth] Wine (20) and John [John Payton] Wine (22). Chrisman is listed as a farmer. No one else is listed as having an occupation. Chrisman, Elizabeth, Smith, and John are listed as not being able to read or write. The children, except the 2 youngest, attended school that year.

The same census shows that Elizabeth's parents lived close by. Her sister, Mary Ann, lived in their household.

Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah Ann, married her first cousin, Sampson Conrad, on June 23, 1855, in Braxton County, VA. Sampson was born about 1835, Braxton County, the son of John Benjamin Conrad and Mary Ann Riffle Conrad.

Sadly, three years later, Sarah Ann Conrad died at the age of 21, of unknown causes, on April 5, 1858, in Braxton County, VA.

According to the 1860 US Census, Christopher conrod [Chrisman Conrad] (age 49, head of household) lived in Braxton County, VA, along with his wife, Elizabeth (38), and their children: Minerva (18), John (17), Elzara (14), Rhue (13), Shelton (12), Thaddius (7), Caleb (4), and Benjamin (3). Chrisman was a farmer. The family had a real estate value of $2,000 and a personal estate value of $175. Chrisman and Elizabeth could not read or write.

According to the above census, the family lived close to the following Conrad households: 1. John B. Conrad, wife, and children [John Benjamin Conrad was Chrisman's brother] 2. Casa Conrad, her children, and her brother, Sampson Conrad [Cassa was Cassandra Conrad, Chrisman's niece] 3. Phebe Conrad and her children [Phebe Conrad was Chrisman's niece] 4. Matilda Conrad and her children [Matilda was Chrisman's niece].

Elizabeth and Chrisman had one son who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Several military records show that John S. Conrad was a private in the 19th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, Company B. One record lists him as 22 years old in 1864.

  • Braxton County, Virginia became Braxton County, West Virginia in 1863, during the American Civil War.

Elizabeth's daughter, Minerva Jane, married Stewart Wesley Williams on March 24, 1864, in Braxton County, West Virginia. Stewart was born Dec. 10, 1834 in Braxton County, the son of Samuel S. Williams and Sarah Donohue Williams.

  • Sarah Donohue was the sister of Edith Donohue, who was the mother of Engra Agnes Shields Conrad, who was the wife of Lemuel Lemon Conrad, who was the brother of Chrisman Conrad, who was Minerva Jane Conrad's father.

Elizabeth's daughter, Elzara M., married Isaac Newton Brown on Sept. 1, 1867, in Braxton County, WV. Isaac was born June 21, 1842, in Fauquier County, Virginia, the son of Alfred Wesley Brown and Mary Elizabeth Harrell Brown.

Elizabeth's son, John S. Conrad, married a widow named Isabell Booher on June 20, 1869, in Wirt County, WV. He was 26 years old and she was 28. Isabell was born abt. 1840 in Wood County, VA, the daughter of John T. Booher and Elizabeth J. Collins Booher.

Elizabeth's daughter, Luverna is believed to have died before 1870 in Braxton County, WV. She was born on Nov. 5, 1860 in Braxton County. She does not appear on any census records for the family or any other records, other than her own birth record.

According to the 1870 US Census, Chrisman Conrad (age 58, head of household) lived in Clay, Braxton County, WV, along with his wife, Rebecca E. (51), and their children: Margaret R. (24), Thadius G. (17), Caleb M. (15), and Benjamin K. (12). Chrisman was listed as a farmer.

Chrisman's family lived next door to son-in-law, Stewart W. Williams (38), daughter, Manerva J. Williams (30), and their young children. Also living in Stewart's household was Jonathan Ratliff (30). Jonathan would later marry Chrisman's and Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Ruhana, in 1877. Stewart and Jonathan are listed as farm labor.

On the other of side of Stewarts family lived John Benjamin Conrad's family [Chrisman's brother]. John was also listed as a farmer. It is likely that all 4 men worked together.

The 1870 census shows that several more Conrad, Williams, and Wine households were nearby.

Elizabeth's son, Shelton C., married Elvira Ann Bragg on May 15, 1875, in Braxton County, WV. Elvira was born Sept. 15, 1853 in Braxton County, the daughter of James Bragg and Mary H. Heaters Bragg.

Elizabeth's daughter, Margaret Ruhana, married Jonathan Ratliff on May 12, 1877 in Braxton County, WV. She was 28 years old and he was 38. Jonathan was born August 13, 1839 in Lewis County, Virginia.

Elizabeth's son, Thaddeus G. married Virginia C. Riffle on March 10, 1878, Braxton County, WV.

Virginia was born about 1846-1848, in Lewis County, VA. She was the former wife of James J. Conrad (possibly common law marriage). The couple had a child, Rachel Conrad (born Dec. 25, 1878) from this union.

  • James and Thaddeus were first cousins. James was the son of John Benjamin Conrad, who was Chrisman's brother.

Elizabeth's husband, Chrisman Conrad, died at the age of 69, on May 21, 1879, in Braxton County, West Virginia, USA. Cause of death was marked as unknown on his WV death record. He was listed as a farmer. He was buried in the Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Heaters, Braxton County, West Virginia, USA.

According to the 1880 US Census, Eliza_ Conrad (age 60, head of household, widowed, farmer) lived in Salt Lick, Braxton County, WV, along with her sons: Martin (24) [Caleb Marion] and Benjamin K. (22), niece, Margaret J. Conrad (10), and brother John P. Wine (55). Caleb is listed as having Consumption [Tuberculosis], and being unable to work. Benjamin and John are listed as laborers. Margaret attended school. Elizabeth's son, Thaddeus and his wife, Virginia, lived next door. However, Virginia's daughter, Rachel, lived with her father, James Conrad.

Elizabeth's son, Caleb Marion, married Magnolia Ann Williston about 1885 in Braxotn County, WV. She was born about 1868.

Elizabeth's son, Shelton, remarried after the death of his wife, Elvira Ann Bragg Conrad. She died April 23, 1897, Braxton County. Shelton married Minnie Helmick on Oct. 23, 1897, in Braxton County. He was 48 and she was 21. Minnie was born about 1876 in Braxton County, WV.

Elizabeth's son, Benjamin K. married Margaret Crawford on Feb. 11, 1898 in Braxton County, WV. They were divorced by 1900 (according to 1900 census).

According to the 1900 US Census, Elizabeth Conrad (age 81, head of household, farmer) lived in Salt Lick, Braxton County, WV, along with her son, Benjamin K. (42) and boarders: Roberta Crawford (40), Mary Crawford (5), Evaline Crawford (4), and James E. Buckhannon (8). The record states that Elizabeth had had 13 children, 7 still living. Benjamin is listed as divorced and farm labor, Roberta as housekeeper. Elizabeth is listed as being able to read but not write. Benjamin could read and write. Roberta could neither read nor write.

In the above census, the family lived close to the households of David S. Wim [David Smyth Wine, Elizabeth's brother], Catherine Conrad [relationship unclear], Martin Conrad [Caleb Marion, Elizabeth's son], and Johnathan and Margaret Ratcliff [Ratliff, son-in-law and daughter].

Rebecca Elizabeth Wine Conrad died in 1903 in Braxton County, West Virginia, USA. She would have been about 84 years old. She was buried in the Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Heaters, Braxton County, West Virginia, USA.
