Biography

James was born about 1813 in South Carolina, United States. He is known to be the son of David S Wilson, based on a deed describing him as the brother of David T Wilson. [1] He appears as the head of household in the 1840 census in Quincy, Gadsden, Florida [2] listed next to a Thomas D Wilson and David Wilson.

Household M 0–4 M 15–19 M 20–29 F 20–29 F 30–39
James M Wilson 11211

The 20–29 year old female would be his wife, Martha. The 0-4 year old male would be his oldest son, William. It is unclear who the other three individuals were. From the 1850 [3] and 1860 [4] censuses, we can see that he and Martha's offspring were:

  1. William W Wilson (abt.1838-aft.1920)
  2. Benjamin Franklin Wilson (b. abt. 1846)
  3. Rebecca Wilson (b. abt. 1848)
  4. Margaret Wilson (b. abt. 1851)

He remains in Quincy for the rest of his life, also appearing in the 1870 [5] and 1880 censuses. [6] James and Martha are also housing their niece, Lucy Rogers, in 1870 and 1880. In the 1880 census, he lists the birthplace of both his parents as South Carolina. [6] It appears Martha passed away before James's death, because she is not named on his will dated 21 Apr 1897. He passed away 8 Jun 1897 in Gadsden County, Florida. [7]

Research Notes

In 1830, he may be residing in Quincy in the household of James Wilson (b. Abt. 1775), because this household contained the only 15–20 year old male Wilson recorded in Gadsden County.. [8]

Possibly the brother of Thomas D Wilson (abt.1802-aft.1885), because they are listed together on a bond. [9]

Perhaps the brother of William Wesley Wilson (abt.1805-abt.1856).

Perhaps the husband of Martha Woodbury, daughter of Methodist minister Collins Woodbury, based on unsourced family trees. http://dougwilson.com/Family/reports//fam6343.html https://web.archive.org/web/20110822225213/http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pastor/johndunnam.htm .
