Dorothie Williamson Dorrington was an educator, author, and community activist in Atlantic City, New Jersey where she helped to further education and Atlantic City's Black community.
Dorothie Williamson was born in 1927 in Darlington, South Carolina.[1][2] She was the daughter of Bennie Williamson and Mary Lee.[3] Her family moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey by 1930. [2]
Dorothie earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Glassboro State College and an ED.S from Rowan University. Her career in education lasted over 50 years, including nine years as president of the Atlantic City Board of Education.[1]
Dorothie was also politically active; the 101 Women Plus organization that she founded was originally created as a way to get members of the community together to vote for James L. Usry in his campaign to become the city's first black Mayor. After the election, the organization continued, promoting cooperation between individuals and agencies in order to further the needs and concerns of Atlantic City's black community. Today, its members include men as well as women, and it focuses on improving quality of life in Atlantic City, helping people develop leadership skills, and providing scholarships.[1]
Dorothie married former hockey player James Arthur "Art" Dorrington in Atlantic City in 1951.[4] They had one daughter.
Dorothie passed away in 2005 and has been memorialized by Atlantic City with a historic street marker.[1]
