Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was an African- American surgeon. He performed the second documented, successful pericardium surgery in America. Dr. Williams founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, which was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States.[1]
Daniel Hale Williams, son of Daniel Hale Williams and Sarah Price, was born in 1856. His father was the son of a Black barber and a Scots-Irish woman. In 1898, Daniel married Alice Johnson,[2] daughter of sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel.[3]
He passed away in 1931[4][5][6] and is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.[7]
