John Cornelius Williams Sr may have been born in North Carolina, or Wales and migrated via Virginia, circa 1739. He married Katherine Katharine Galbraith Culbreth or Galbreth circa 1740 in Sampson, North Carolina.[1]
Captain John She Williams (bef. 1745-c. 1800), m. unknown, m. Katharine Carouth[3]
Robert Williams (c. 1750-aft. 4 Sep 1813), m. Barbary Culbreth, m. Susan Daniels[3]
Daniel Williams (bef. 1755-bef. 19 Feb 1811), m. Mary Maxwell, but both his paternity and this marriage are unconfirmed[3]
Thomas Williams (d. unmarried bef. 26 Oct 1774)[3]
unknown daughter (presumptively Jean Williams, ca. 1740-1805), m. Daniel Tew
The same author who painstakingly describes the supporting evidence for the children also suggests that he was an immigrant from Wales.[1] Rosser (1990) also cites evidence of his estate inventory being filed 20 Oct 1783. Fourteen patents and five land transactions regarding this John Williams (including 4 posthumous, probate settlement actions by Governor Alexander Martin on 10 Nov 1784) are in Rosser's text.
John Williams apparently died in late 1783, He left his wife a large estates including 700
acres of land. Estate inventoried on 20 October 1783.
John Williams was listed in the 1783 Tax List of Duplin County with an assessed value of 588 pounds.
"Catron" Williams is listed in the 1784 Tax List of Sampson County as having 700 acres of land, no free polls, and four black polls.
The 1790 Census of Sampson County lists Catherine Williams with one male under
the age of 16, three females, and four slaves; John Williams with three males over the age of 16, one male under 16, three females, and six slaves; and Robert Williams with one male over the age of 16, four males under 16, four females, and five slaves.

In working up this profile, possible matches for parents to provide a more complete biography, David Williams (ca. 1693-1783) and Elizabeth John (born 1697) were also considered.[citation needed]

"There were several John Williamses in North Carolina which has made a tangle of genealogy research in Cumberland, Sampson County, and New Hanover County. According to John Rosser, Cumberland County Genealogist, 'there were as many Neil Culbreths as there were John Williamses. Too many! Separating them is very difficult." John Rosser.
Rank and middle name are questionable too. the only John Williams I saw in Revolutionary war pensions was a Corporal. He could be a Colonel or Captain but needs documentation. Same for his son. See listed as John C, John Cornelius, John She or Shay.[4]
His son, Captain John "She" Williams, son of John Williams and Katharine Galbreth, b. c. 1745, probably in New Hanover (eventually Duplin and then named Sampson); d. c. 1799 in Sampson, (picks up on p. 15/41).[4]
Another read of the Rosser text: John Williams, born about 1720, may have immigrated from Wales to Virginia in 1739, and then to North Carolina in 1740 or he may have been born in North Carolina, in that part of New Hanover that later became Duplin, but probably of Welsh heritage. He married Katharine Galbreth. Descendants lived chiefly in North Carolina and in Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, and elsewhere.[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships.
It is likely that these
autosomal DNA
test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
Williams-64082 and Williams-21561 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same origins, they have the same named spouse (the latter for whom a merge is also about to be proposed)
It is noted that the two John Williams have previously been rejected as a match, thus, at least the son She Williams appears to be attached to the wrong parent.
Note also that the use of full middle names and Sr on these various profiles may be specious unless these are actually documented in the sources.
These two profiles are the same person. Given the extensive work in the Rosser text, and that Cornelius as a middle name was not documented in any records, that otherwise well-researched profile should probably be the model record, even though it says John Corneilius Williams Sr. (Undocumented tradition.)
Let me know if I can help get this sorted. Thanks.
The following reference text is well-researched. It describes the children, especially beginning on p. 2. As of this comment, not all of the children are documented on this profile:
Williams-37258 and Williams-21561 appear to represent the same person because: these are the same person. More sourcing has been added to the John Cornelius Williams profile, but between the two profiles, a more complete family constellation will be created. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am still working on this line, and at least one other duplicate is noted, that remains pending at this time.
