Notes / Massachusetts Bay and Rhode Island

The earliest permanent settlement was established at Providence in 1636 by English clergyman Roger Williams and a small band of followers who left the repressive atmosphere of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to seek freedom of worship.

In 1644, Roger Williams journeyed to England, where he secured a parliamentary patent uniting the four original towns (Providence, Portsmouth, Newport, and Warwick) into a single colony: the Providence Plantations. This legislative grant remained in effect until the Stuart Restoration made it prudent to seek a royal charter.

The royal charter, secured for Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations from Charles II on July 15, 1663, guaranteed religious liberty, permitting significant local autonomy, and strengthened the colony's territorial claims.

Newport County was constituted on June 22, 1703, as one of the two original counties of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. As originally established, Newport County consisted of four towns: Portsmouth, Newport, Jamestown, and New Shoreham (present day Block Island).

"About 1645, Albro married Dorothy, the widow of Nathaniel Potter, whose maiden name is not known. John and Dorothy had five known children, all of whom grew to maturity, married, and had children. Their two sons Samuel and John were both original proprietors of the settlement of East Greenwich."

Per Anderson, "apparently the only evidence for the claim that John Albro married the widow of Nathaniel Potter.[2]

I've found no source that shows the surname for Dorothy... perhaps one of the profile managers here has found a scholarly source? If not, it should be changed to Dorothy Unknown. Thank you.
Changed first marriage date to coincide with birth of first child in 1638. Also, deleted first marriage location of Portsmouth, as it wasn't a settlement until 1638, and the sources don't seem to support the profile data.

Dorothy's birth date is indicated as 1620; her daughter, Deborah, has a birth date of 1628. Was Deborah actually her daughter?
