Biography

Margaret Whope was born in about 1783 in Nafferton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, and she was christened there on the 8th of November 1783. Margaret's parents were Joseph Hope and Elizabeth (Stork) Hope.^[1][2]

Margaret was one of at least four children born to Joseph and Elizabeth; her three siblings were Thomas (1782),^[3] Elizabeth (1786) who died in childhood,^[4] and Elizabeth (1787),^[5] who were all born and christened in Nafferton.

Between 1787 and 1789 Margaret's mother Elizabeth passed away when she was between 29 and 31 years old; Margaret would have been between 4 and 6 years old. Margaret's father Joseph remarried in 1789 to a woman named Mary Pattison in Nafferton on the 7th of September.^[6]

Margaret's father Joseph and stepmother Mary had at least four children together; Margaret's four half-siblings were Mary (1793),^[7] Joseph (1795),^[8] James (1799),^[9] and Benjamin (1801),^[10] who were all born and christened in Nafferton.

When Margaret was about 20 years old, in 1803, she married William Dale on the 18th of July 1803 in Rowley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, which was about 20 miles from Nafferton.^[11]

Margaret and William had at least ten children together who were Elizabeth Hope (1806), who died in childhood,^[12] Christopher (1808),^[13] Mary (1811),^[14] Elizabeth (1812),^[15] Margaret (1815),^[16] William (1817),^[17] Joseph (1820),^[18] Hannah (1822),^[19] Anne (1824), ^[20] and Emma (1826).^[21] Margaret and William's eldest two children Elizabeth and Christopher were born and christened in Pocklington, which was also in the East Riding of Yorkshire and was about 20 miles from Nafferton, and their youngest eight children were all born in Beverley and christened in Saint Mary's and Saint Nicholas', which was also in the East Riding of Yorkshire and about 15 miles from Nafferton and about 17 miles from Pocklington.

At some point Margaret moved from Nafferton to Pocklington, probably after she married William in 1803, and she lived there until at least 1808. Between 1808 and 1811 Margaret and her family moved from Pocklington to Beverley.

Between 1830 and 1838 Margaret's husband William died in Beverley.
