  • Source: S252 Media: Letter- E-Mail Margaret Fairbrother Les Foss 6 Jun 2006 Margaret Fairbrother was born 16 Mar 1782 at Norridgewock, ME and died 12 Sept 1859 at Hartland, ME. She married John Whiting 1 Jan 1806 at Norridgewock. John was born 25 Jan 1759 at Billerica, ME and died June 13, 1846 at Hartland. Both are buried at Fuller Cemetery on Beane Corner Road near Hartland. Margaret's tombstone was replaced about thirty years ago; John's is original and still quite legible, and is inscribed "In memory of John Whiting - A Revolutionary Soldier - who died June 13, 1846 Ae 87 yrs 4 mo and 19 d." John was just 16 years old when he "answered the call" on April 19, 1775, and remained a Revolutionary War Soldier for eight years. He married Elizabeth Hazeltine or Hazelton in 1789 at Fryeburg, ME and they had one child before mother and child died. He was past 46 years of age when he married 23-year-old Margaret Fairbrother. John Whiting was descended from Rev Samuel Whiting and Elizabeth St John, who came to America in 1636 and settled at Lynn, MA. Elizabeth St John was descended from William the Lion, King of Scots, and William I, King of England. The children of John and Margaret were: Nancy, b 5 Oct 1806, d 20 Apr 1809; Leonard, b 11 Mar 1808, m Hannah who was born 17 Sept 1798, d 23 Nov 1840 and is burried at Fuller Cemetery; Susannah, b 22 Feb 1810; Brice McLellan, b 2 Apr 1812, m Elizabeth and had daughter Frances H. b May 1846, d 28 Jul 1857 and is buried at Fuller Cemetery; Sarah B., b 15 Feb 1815, married Mr. Ellis; Betsey Hazelton (named for her father's first wife), b 26 Apr 1817 at Hartland, d 9 Sept 1897 at Abbot, ME, m John Quincy Adams abt 1839 and had 11 children; John, b 5 Mar 1820; and Benjamin French, b 8 June 1822. John and Betsey Adams are buried at Blanchard Cemetery at Abbot (now called Abbot Village), ME. The above includes all I know about the children of John and Margaret (Fairbrother) Whiting except for the descendants of John and Betsey (Whiting) Adams, from whom I am descended. I'll be happy to send you info on their descendants if you are interested. You mentioned that you are researching the Fairbrothers. I have that Margaret was one of ten children born to Lovell and Catherine Fairbrother. Catherine's maiden name may have been Withee; she had previously been married to a Mr. Howe and had a son named John Howe. Lovell was born 31 Mar 1746 at Attleboro, MA and died 23 Oct 1813 at Norridgewock, ME. He was the son of Thomas Fairbrother and Susannah, daughter of Peter Wester or Webster. Thomas was born about 1710 in England and died in 1764; he married Susannah 2 Feb 1732/33 at Rehoboth, MA. Lovell was one of twelve children born to Thomas and Susannah and served in the French and Indian War; his three youngest brothers all served in the Revolutionary War. Benedict Arnold stayed at Lovell Fairbrother's home on the way to Quebec . . . I have the names of the other children of Thomas and Susannah, and some spouses and children; also the names of the other children of Lovell and Catherine and some of their spouses and children, and will be happy to share if you don't already have this information. Do you know Catherine Howe Fairbrother's maiden name? Do you have any info on the ancestors of Thomas Fairbrother? And where do you fit into all this? Do we share some common ancestors? I am not descended from John and Hannah (Grant) Foss; John's sister Betsey was my gggrandmother . . . Betsey was born 14 Apr 1812 and m Benjamin Foss in October, 1832 at Brighton, ME. Asa Laughton Foss, firstborn son of Benjamin and Betsey, was my greatgrandfather. Les Foss Italicized: Y Paranthetical: Y
